We are seeking an experienced Maintenance Supervisor to lead daily operations within our fleet maintenance facility. This position is responsible for supervising maintenance personnel, coordinating shop operations, supporting fleet readiness, and assisting in the overall management of the Maintenance Department. The successful candidate will provide leadership to mechanics and technicians while ensuring vehicles are maintained safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements. This is a fleet and shop maintenance leadership role focused on transit buses, diesel vehicles, mechanics, technicians, and maintenance operations. It is not a building maintenance, facilities maintenance, custodial, grounds maintenance, or janitorial position.

Position Summary

As Maintenance Supervisor, you will play a critical role in ensuring every vehicle leaving the yard is safe, reliable, compliant, and ready for service. You will supervise maintenance personnel, oversee repair and preventive maintenance activities, support operational goals, and help maintain a culture focused on safety, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Your leadership directly impacts fleet reliability, service delivery, employee development, and the customer experience for Asheville riders. 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Maintenance Team Leadership

  • Supervise maintenance personnel and direct day-to-day maintenance activities.
  • Organize, prioritize, and assign work to maintenance employees based on operational needs.
  • Monitor work quality and ensure repairs and maintenance activities are completed accurately and efficiently.
  • Provide technical guidance, instruction, and support to maintenance personnel.
  • Coach, mentor, and support employee development through training and continuous learning opportunities.
  • Foster a positive, respectful, inclusive, and safety-focused work environment.
  • Assist with employee scheduling, attendance management, performance coaching, discipline, grievance handling, and leave administration.

Fleet Maintenance Operations

  • Oversee preventive maintenance inspections, diagnostics, repairs, and servicing of transit buses and support vehicles.
  • Ensure vehicles are maintained in accordance with company standards, manufacturer recommendations, and regulatory requirements.
  • Review daily maintenance reports and monitor fleet condition, availability, and performance.
  • Direct road call responses and emergency repair activities.
  • Conduct quality control inspections to verify repairs and maintenance work meet established standards.
  • Monitor maintenance trends and identify opportunities to improve fleet reliability and reduce downtime.
  • Recognize operational challenges and recommend practical solutions to improve maintenance effectiveness.

Shop Operations and Resource Management

  • Assist with procurement, inventory control, parts distribution, and stock management activities.
  • Supervise the proper use of maintenance equipment, tools, supplies, and shop resources.
  • Monitor workflow, productivity, and maintenance scheduling to ensure efficient operations.
  • Support planning efforts related to future maintenance projects, equipment needs, and operational improvements.
  • Coordinate with vendors and service providers as needed to support maintenance objectives.
  • Assist with departmental budget management and cost-control efforts.

Safety and Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure all maintenance activities are performed in accordance with established safety programs and procedures.
  • Enforce compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and company safety requirements.
  • Conduct safety meetings, facility inspections, audits, and employee training programs.
  • Partner with Safety, Operations, and Continuous Improvement teams to strengthen safety performance and operational excellence.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and required compliance documentation.
  • Support a culture where safety, accountability, and quality workmanship are non-negotiable.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director of Maintenance with administrative and operational duties as required.
  • Support departmental initiatives, projects, and process improvement efforts.
  • Prepare reports and maintain documentation related to maintenance operations.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Training, Safety, and Leadership teams to support organizational goals.
  • Participate in planning activities related to future operational and financial needs.

Emergency Response

  • Respond to maintenance emergencies requiring immediate attention.
  • Direct response activities involving road calls, vehicle breakdowns, accidents, injuries, and other service interruptions.
  • Be available to support after-hours, weekend, and emergency maintenance situations as operational needs require.

Profile

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a two-year diesel mechanics program or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years of supervisory experience in a vehicle maintenance, fleet maintenance, diesel, heavy equipment, or transit maintenance environment.
  • Extensive experience repairing and maintaining diesel engines, buses, and heavy-duty vehicles.
  • Strong knowledge of preventive maintenance programs, vehicle diagnostics, repair procedures, and maintenance shop operations.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.
  • Basic computer skills and experience using maintenance management software and related technology.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, administrative, and supervisory skills.
  • CDL with Passenger Endorsement or the ability to obtain within an established timeframe.
  • Must successfully pass required drug and alcohol testing.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and respond to emergency situations when required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Transit, motor coach, or public transportation maintenance experience.
  • ASE Certifications or equivalent industry credentials.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment.
  • Experience with fleet maintenance software and asset management systems.

  • Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including exposure to heat, cold, noise, and outdoor elements.
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to move throughout maintenance facilities, operational areas, and office environments as required.
  • Ability to prepare reports and communicate effectively in person, electronically, and by telephone.
