Bus Operator – Pay, Benefits & Role Overview 

Pay & Benefits 

  • Starting Pay: $25.00 per hour 
  • Sign-On Bonus: Up to $7,500 (based on qualifications) 
  • CDL Bonus: Up to $2,250 for CDL with Passenger Endorsement 
  • Paid CDL Training: No cost to you—we’ll train and support you

Your Role 

As a Bus Operator with ART (Asheville Rides Transit), you will safely transport passengers along fixed routes throughout Asheville while providing reliable, customer-focused service. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Safely operate buses on scheduled routes throughout the Asheville area 
  • Provide friendly, professional customer service 
  • Assist passengers, including individuals with disabilities 
  • Follow all traffic laws, safety procedures, and company policies 
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections (DVIR compliance) 
  • Communicate with dispatch regarding routes, detours, or incidents 
  • Operate bus equipment safely (farebox, lift, radio, emergency equipment) 
  • Collect fares and maintain accurate passenger counts 
  • Respond to incidents or emergencies following established procedures 
  • Report accidents or unusual events and complete required documentation 

Minimum Requirements 

  • Must be 21 years or older 
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record 
  • High school diploma or equivalent 
  • Ability to pass a DOT physical and drug screening 
  • Strong communication and customer service skills 
  • Willingness to obtain a CDL with Passenger Endorsement (training provided)
