Profile
Maintenance – TECH MECHANIC
Maintenance Tech - $21.00 - $26.00/HR
Key Responsibilities:
- Diagnose, repair, replace, and maintain bus components including engines (gasoline, diesel, alternative fuel), transmissions, brakes, fuel and emission systems, drivelines, steering and suspension, HVAC, electrical systems, ADA equipment, safety/fire suppression systems, and more.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance (oil changes, lubrication, battery care, compressed natural gas tank inspections, etc.)
- Use diagnostic computer software (e.g., Cummins Insite, Allison DOC) and equipment to troubleshoot and repair sub-components on all bus types.
- Follow and interpret technical schematics and repair manuals accurately.
- Operate hand and power tools, in-ground and portable hoists, as well as precision instruments to complete assigned tasks safely.
- Maintain a clean, organized work environment and adhere strictly to all safety protocols.
- Keep detailed electronic repair records, work history, and maintenance logs.
- Test drive vehicles to verify proper operation and diagnose issues.
- Perform minor fabrication, welding, grinding, and soldering, as necessary.
- Provide technical support and assist in the training of lower-level mechanics.
- Take on backfill supervisory duties as assigned.
- Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and non-technical personnel, documenting solutions clearly.
- Work cohesively in a team environment to ensure vehicle safety and meet operational deadlines.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 1-year progressive heavy equipment maintenance experience preferred.
- Two (2) years technical degree or equivalent hands-on experience preferred.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot and repair electrical and mechanical systems on buses.
- Strong computer skills including intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office and diagnostic software.
- Ability to read and understand complex schematics and technical documentation.
- Customer-focused attitude with high professionalism, discretion, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Detail-oriented, resourceful, diligent, and capable of working independently with limited supervision.
- Excellent time management, organizational, problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills
- Flexible and committed to working in a 24/7 operational environment.
- Valid driver’s license required; CDL endorsement desirable.
- Additional training from mechanical/technical schools, courses, or seminars is a plus.
Education
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum of one-two years of vocational/technical schooling or equivalent work experience.
- Experience: Available classifications (shown below) based upon collective bargaining agreements.
- Level A: Hiring Level.

- Partner with Safety, Risk, and Continuous Improvement teams to implement process improvements, ensuring compliance and operational excellence.
- Adhere to preventive maintenance principles and quality management standards.
Regulatory and Compliance:
- Extensive knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws related to maintenance.
- Ensure compliance with labor management policies and procedures.
- Ability to interact and communicate with public officials and all levels of staff, including managers, supervisors, and intra-department personnel.
- Demonstrate considerable knowledge of bus maintenance principles, procedures, and policies.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with teams, colleagues, the public, medical and governmental agencies, elected officials, and the board of trustees.
Leadership
Excellent interpersonal and public communication skills
- Maintains and oversee all safety and safety related equipment in the fleet and facility.
- Manages or assists in matters relating to Worker's Compensation, Drug & Alcohol, and Employee Assistance Programs to ensure the agency’s compliance and employee concerns are handled promptly.
- Directs all Safety/Security Programs, including training-related programs and supervisory responsibilities.
Business Acumen
- Analyzes data and records to identify areas in need of improvement or areas that are excelling.
- Prepares and formulates written correspondence, operational safety bulletins, and notices.
- Diligence and precision in record keeping, ensuring all training is scheduled, performed, and kept up to date.
Interpersonal/Engagement
- Represents the organization for the transit system; friendly, approachable, and available to system employees and the public; held to the highest safety standards to be an example.
- Maintains an effective working relationship and communication with the General Manager, peers, and subordinates.
