We are searching for a Crisis Counselor to join our team in Asheville, NC and support our employees in times of personal and professional crisis. This position will be onsite full-time.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct rapid assessments of individuals in crisis (employees, passengers, or contractors) to identify emotional, psychological or safety risks.
- Provide immediate intervention and stabilization: de-escalation, emotional support, safety planning, and linking to appropriate follow-up services.
- Develop and implement individualized action or safety plans addressing the current crisis and next steps.
- Collaborate with RATP Dev management, transit partner stakeholders, human resources, and external community agencies to coordinate care, referrals, and follow-up support.
- Document all counseling interactions, crisis incidents, interventions, referrals, and follow-up in an accurate, timely, and confidential manner according to policy and regulatory requirements.
- Provide educational outreach and training to employees (and possibly passengers) on stress management, mental health awareness, and crisis response resources.
- Maintain professional competence: attend trainings, stay current with best practices in crisis counseling, mental health, trauma‐informed care and regulatory/legal matters.
- Occasionally provide on-call or after-hours support as part of the crisis response team (depending on site needs).
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Human Services or a related field. (Master’s degree preferred)
- Minimum of 2-5 years of crisis counseling, mental health, or related experience (higher if advanced role).
- Strong knowledge of crisis intervention techniques, suicide risk assessment, de-escalation strategies, safety planning, and trauma-informed practices.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; ability to engage with diverse populations and to act calmly under pressure.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external service providers.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, adhere to ethical standards and document accurately.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (if role requires travel between sites or community responses).
- Preferred: Certification in crisis intervention (e.g., ASIST, QPR), experience in transit or transportation environment, familiarity with EAP (Employee Assistance Program) services.
